Fantastic Antique Etruscan Majolica Berry Bowl in the highly collectible Shell and Seaweed pattern produced by Griffen, Smith, and Hill.

This piece is highly detailed and glazed in lush shades of pink, green, brown, and gray with that gorgeous aqua center. The hallmark dates to 1880 or a little after.

“The largest and best known of the American majolica manufacturers was Griffen, Smith and Hill.

In 1867, John Griffen partnered with W.A.H. Schreiber in establishing pottery in conjunction with the Philadelphia Iron Works producing fire bricks and Rockingham wares. The business thrived, and in 1871 John Smith, an English potter from Stoke-on-Trent joined the firm with Schreiber leaving soon thereafter. Griffin’s sons Henry and George joined the firm along with Potter William Hill. Thereafter, the partnership was known as Griffen, Smith, and Hill and by 1879 had begun producing Majolica.”

I acquired this piece at the estate of two highly regarded college professors who after retirement in the 1990s turned their love for collecting into a prosperous antique business selling in Round Top as well as across the South.
As you can imagine, their estate was unbelievable…it had the most extensive Majolica collection I’ve ever seen. They were avid book collectors, orchid enthusiasts, and custom framers who expertly framed botanicals and birds from antique books and magazines.

It measures 5.5” in diameter wide and is in nice vintage condition with only a couple of teeny shallow chips around the rim. They are barely noticeable and are consistent with age and in no way detract from its displayability. Please see all the pics as they are meant as part of the description.

I’ve been told by a Majolica collector that a chip is a sign of a Majolica piece's age and in no way deters its collectibility.
