In Act I, Scene 4 of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, the king arrives in disguise at Cardinal Wolsey’s supper and chooses Anne as his partner. This hand-painted watercolor and gouache on paper brings us close enough to see the meeting of their hands. Anne glances away beneath the pale fan vaulting, with a sweep of blue drapery against her ivory gown and Henry’s rich red cloak.

The painting is attributed to Alfred Edward Chalon, R.A. Chalon was a sought-after British society portraitist and the first artist Queen Victoria sat for after her accession.
