Baroque Erhart & Sohne Art Nouveau Putti Relief Music/Jewelry Box, Made in Germany c. 1900-1940
Baroque Erhart & Sohne Art Nouveau Putti Relief Music/Jewelry Box, Made in Germany c. 1900-1940
Lovely antique (or near antique) footed music/jewelry box made in Germany by Erhart & Sohne. Per the stamp, this piece dates to c. 1900-1940.
The elaborately embossed Baroque art nouveau relief features putti on intricately detailed two-toned silvered and polished brass. When opened, there's a vibrantly colored French courting scene with red velvet lining. Per the stamp, this piece dates to c. 1900-1940. It opens and closely perfectly, but it seems the music box may have been over wound. That isn't surprising considering the age.
Erhard & Sohne were a prominent name in metalwork in Germany in the 19th and early 20th centuries based in Schwäbisch Gmünd near Stuttgart. Their pieces are considered some of the best and are highly collectible.
I acquired this piece from the posh Texas estate of a former hospital president and his lovely wife. Both of whom were lovely, beloved pillars of the community.
It measures 5” wide x 4” deep x 2.5” tall.
Comps on true Erhart & Sohne pieces run from around $300 to over $2k.
