Large Pair of GLORIOUS Vintage Japanese Kutani Celadon Glazed Ducks. Talk about chinoiserie chic!!
Hand painted and celadon glazed porcelain with detailed feathers in vibrant shades of blue, green, purple and yellow with gold accents including their bills. Circa early 20th century.
The Kutani process originated in Japan in the late 17th century and is known for vibrant, rich colors.
Celadon refers to the transparent glaze that gives pieces that greenish-blue tint. Highly favored by the Chinese Imperial Court, it started out as a green wash but the blue finish was discovered when too little iron oxide was used and soon became the preferred color. You can see the blue tint on the underside of the body on each duck.
Combining the Kutani and Celadon finishes is pure luxury. My EXTRA heart can almost not take the pure fantasticness of this pair!!
I acquired this pair at a posh Central Texas estate. I opened the door and almost dropped at the sight of the incredible pieces that awaited… I has the consciously close my mouth, lol.
They are substantial in size and weight measuring 12” tall x 11” wide and 11” wide x 7” tall. Both weigh over 5lbs. each. They are both in lovely estate condition. The taller duck has a line in its bill that I highlighted in a picture. It is part of the original finish.
