Mary, Queen of Scots Miniature Painting Portrait, C. Late 19th Century

Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) the great granddaughter of Henry the VII of England, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland was Queen of Scotland from 1542 until her abdication in 1567.

In 1548 she was sent to live in France after being betrothed to Francois, the Dauphine of France, They married in 1558 making her Queen Consort of France until his death in 1560. 

She returned to Scotland where she eventually married Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. This marriage produced her only child, James.

After Lord Darnley’s death, she returned to England where she was eventually executed in 1587 for the supposed plot to assassinate her cousin, Queen ElizaBeth I.

Miniature portraits first became popular in the 16th century.

Throughout the Medieval and Renaissance periods, portraits of royals and the affluent began being included in books, but it was Jean Clouet (1480-1541), a French artist working at the court of Francois I, who brought them to the masses as works of art.

Their popularity soon spread to England, where they were often framed or made into lockets or boxes.

It’s enveloped in a fantastic patterned bone with highly detailed gold tole surrounding convex glass. Circa late 19th century.
