They say everything is bigger in Texas...Just look at this HUGE pair of antique English Staffordshire Lions!
This pair of heirloom recumbent lions were made in Staffordshire, England, circa 19th century, and what a pair they are. Estate-sized, measuring 11” wide x 11” tall, they are perfect mantle pieces, focal pieces on a console table, or the center of attention as part of a bookshelf display. The coloring with the gilt highlights is absolutely stunning... actual heirloom pieces!
They are beautifully sculpted with natural glass eyes, something widely used in 1800s England. The coloring with the gilt highlights is absolutely stunning. They have firing holes o the back and underneath with smaller pin-prick holes that lend to their authenticity. Genuine Staffordshire antiques are never stamped or marked. They were initially made for aristocratic families as display pieces, so there was no need to do so.
They are in excellent condition, with the lion on the right having a hairline crack in the left eye and some light crazing, but neither of these things is uncommon for their age.
These lovelies were acquired from an old Austin estate where they had been well-loved for many, many years. In addition, this family had a lovely collection of Staffordshire pottery, including the FAB antique Ironstone Platter Tray Table we also have listed.
$642 for the pair INCLUDES INSURED SHIPPING in the continental US.
