With its lion-like mane, deep soulful eyes, and unmistakable air of superiority, this large vintage porcelain Pekingese statue is a regal nod to one of the most storied toy breeds in history. Lavishly hand-painted with cascading florals in rich pinks, delicate blues, and lush greens, this statue brings the charm of a Victorian salon and the lineage of an imperial court into one splendid objet d’art.

The Pekingese dog hails from ancient China, where they were bred exclusively for Chinese royalty—so revered, in fact, that commoners were required to bow to them. Known as “Lion Dogs” for their resemblance to the guardian lions of Chinese legend, these little nobles were often carried in the sleeves of Emperors and Empresses. Their proud expressions, as seen in this piece, reflect generations of pampered privilege.

This particular porcelain rendering—likely a mid-century Italian or Japanese export—captures that same imperial haughtiness, softened by a romantic bouquet of hand-painted blossoms. It’s the perfect addition to a grandmillennial interior, heirloom-inspired shelf, or maximalist tablescape.

It’s substantial in stature  measuring 14” tall x 8” wide x 6” deep and is in lovely estate condition. 

I acquired it while sourcing in the Texas Hill Country.
