Atmospheric and wonderfully intimate, La Nuit — The Night is an antique French engraving after Sigmund Freudenberger (1745–1801) and belongs to the extraordinary tradition of 18th-century French costume prints documenting fashionable society.

Unlike the outdoor promenades in this collection, La Nuit takes us inside. Figures gather within an elegant interior, creating an intimate glimpse into the clothing, interiors and social rituals of late-18th-century French life.

According to the auction-house cataloguing, the engraving is on laid, watermarked paper and exhibits age-related foxing and toning throughout.

Beautifully presented with layered powder-blue, ivory and gilt French matting within an ornate gilt frame.
