The original 1773 design was commissioned by Charles-Philippe, comte d'Artois (later King Charles X of France), as part of an elaborate decorative program surrounding presentation models of La Samaritaine created for Marie-Antoinette and Marie-Thérèse of Savoy. The resulting designs embodied the opulence, symbolism, and architectural refinement associated with the French court during the reign of Louis XVI.
