18th-Century French Costume Engraving, La Promenade du Matin After Freudenberger, 1774

An exceptional estate-sourced French engraving dating to 1774, La Promenade du MatinThe Morning Walk — is after Swiss artist Sigmund Freudenberger (1745–1801) and engraved by French artist Charles-Louis Lingée (1748–1819).

The wonderfully detailed scene offers a window into the dress, manners and everyday rituals of fashionable French society during the final decades of the Ancien Régime.

Associated with the celebrated Monument du Costume, these engravings were far more than simply decorative costume plates: together they chronicled the clothing, social customs and elegant daily life of 18th-century France.

According to the auction-house cataloguing, this engraving is on laid, watermarked paper, with beautiful age-related foxing and toning visible throughout.

Presented beneath glass with particularly lovely layered powder-blue, ivory and gilt French matting, finished with an ornate gilt frame.
