1914 Original Oil Painting by German Artist Vitus Staudacher | Antique European Landscape

An exceptional 1914 original oil painting by German artist Vitus Staudacher, sourced from a private collector in the Texas Hill Country.

This is the kind of antique painting that rewards a closer look. At first, you see a sweeping European countryside rendered in rich autumnal color. Then an entire world begins to emerge within the landscape.

Staudacher captured the rhythms of rural life in extraordinary detail: an old farmhouse nestled beneath the mountains, figures along the path, a woman near the house, laundry hanging outside, chickens wandering through the yard, a farm wagon, and even smoke appearing to drift from the farmhouse.

It is not simply a landscape—it feels like a moment in European country life preserved on canvas more than a century ago.

The painting is signed by Vitus Staudacher and dated 1914 at the lower right. His expressive brushwork is particularly beautiful throughout the trees, mountains and expansive sky, with layers of warm ochre, russet, green and blue creating the wonderfully atmospheric palette associated with early 20th-century European landscape painting.

The surface displays pronounced age-related craquelure, particularly visible through the sky and lighter passages, giving the painting the unmistakable character of its 112 years. The surface also appears to have received a later protective coating or varnish at some point in its history. This is mentioned for accuracy and is part of the painting’s present condition rather than represented as an original surface.

Adding another intriguing chapter to its history is an old ARTISANA • GENÈVE label remaining on the reverse of the frame, connecting the piece to Geneva, Switzerland, at some point during its long life.

The painting is housed in a substantial carved gilt frame whose warm, aged finish beautifully complements the colors of the landscape.

For the collector of European paintings, German art, antique landscapes, Old World interiors, Ralph Lauren-inspired rooms, or truly collected homes, this is an extraordinary opportunity to add an original work with more than a century of history.
