1956 French Line Illustrated Menu — Cadet Rousselle | Jean A. Mercier

1956 French Line Illustrated Menu — Cadet Rousselle | Jean A. Mercier

A little French history with quite a colorful personality. This original 1956 French Line menu features Jean A. Mercier’s whimsical illustration for “Cadet Rousselle,” with a jaunty figure dressed in yellow, a red umbrella, and a lively gathering of animals.

The reverse carries the song’s printed music and French lyrics, with a musical arrangement credited to Charles Dumont. The menu itself explains the connection: the illustration and arrangement were drawn from Nos vieilles chansons (“Our Old Songs”), bringing traditional French songs to the dining tables of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, known as the French Line.

Today, this charming piece of vintage travel ephemera makes distinctive artwork for a collected home. Frame it for a gallery wall, display it on an easel, or group it with other illustrated menus for a colorful collection with a story.
