1956 French Line Illustrated Menu — Gentil Coquelicot | Jean A. Mercier
Blue ribbons, red poppies, and a little French romance. This original 1956 French Line menu features Jean A. Mercier’s enchanting illustration for “Gentil Coquelicot,” showing a figure in a blue dress and ribbon-trimmed bonnet, holding a basket and greeting a small bird amid colorful garden flowers.
The reverse features the song’s printed music and French lyrics, with a musical arrangement credited to Charles Dumont. The printed credit explains that the illustration and arrangement came from Nos vieilles chansons (“Our Old Songs”), pairing traditional French songs with artwork on menus for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, known as the French Line.
With its garden setting and lovely palette, this vintage menu would make a charming framed accent for a bedroom, sitting room, or collected gallery wall. Equally pretty displayed on an easel, it is a small piece of travel history with lasting decorative appeal.
