19th Century French Porcelain Napoleon III Table Top, Ebonized Wood, Hand Painted
Napoleon III Jardiniere tables have become my new obsession. I was super excited to find this piece… it’s Ebonized wood with a hand painted centurion scene on French faience. It was the lid to a table but is now a wall hanging but could also be displayed in an easel. I love that it was saved and can now be enjoyed in a new way.
Ebonizing is a technique that uses black wood stain to imitate ebony. The technique originated in the 16th century, but became popular in the 19th century when ebony was no longer plentiful enough to meet the demand for furniture.
Jardiniere Planter tables were used in Victorian parlors to display flowers and plants and were often decorated with a floral motif. The top tray has a beautiful porcelain sea scene and gilt handles that lifts off to show the area used for flowers and plants.
It measures 15.75” wide x tall x 10.5” tall x 1” deep. It’s in really lovely condition but has wear consistent with it’s age.
Pieces like this are why I love sourcing the South and the great state of Texas for vintage and antique estate decor…shopping estate sales, auctions, charity thrift stores, and antique malls to carefully curate a collection of fantastic finds that have and will stand the test of time.
