This exquisite 19th-century-style jardiniere planter table is a maximalist’s dream. With sweeping curved legs and neoclassical proportions, it blends the grandeur of Napoleon III Empire design with whimsical storytelling.
A central hand-painted porcelain panel on the planter’s front and back showcases a pastoral Putti scene whilethe removable top tray has a pair of heron or cranes—a nod to European romanticism—while the intricate inlaid woodwork and ormolu bronze mounts shimmer with timeworn elegance. Suspended brass chains, a decorative gallery rail add layers of drama and sophistication.
Inside, you’ll find a removable metal liner, ideal for fresh florals, potted plants, or as a cache for curiosities. This piece is as functional as it is ornamental—a rare blend of utility and beauty that brings neoclassical fantasy to life.
Whether placed in a sunlit solarium overflowing with ferns or used as a statement entryway piece, this jardiniere doesn’t whisper elegance—it declares it. Perfect for those who collect storied furniture with character or French antiques, this is a true heirloom ready to anchor any room with old-world charm.
Ebonizing is a technique that uses black wood stain to imitate ebony. It originated in the 16th century but became popular in the 19th century when ebony was no longer plentiful enough to meet the demand for furniture.
Jardiniere Planter tables were used in Victorian parlors to display flowers and plants and were often decorated with a floral motif. The top tray has a beautiful porcelain piece with a pair of egrets or cranes with ornate knobs as handles that lifts off to show the removable metal liner. The side scenes depict a cherub or putto and a lady dancing.
I acquired it at an amazing Texas estate auction.
It measures 32” tall x 21.5” wide x 14” deep. It’s in really lovely condition but has wear consistent with its age.
Pieces like this are why I love sourcing the South and the great state of Texas for vintage and antique estate decor…shopping estate sales, auctions, charity thrift stores, and antique malls to carefully curate a collection of fantastic finds that have and will stand the test of time.
