Antique English 20” Blue Willow Chinoiserie Platter 

A feast for the eyes and the table, this splendid antique English Blue Willow platter measures an impressive 20.5 inches wide and is a masterclass in timeless British tableware. With its rich cobalt blue transfer and crisply defined pattern, this piece captures the drama and elegance of one of England’s most beloved ceramic motifs.

While Blue Willow was inspired by Chinese porcelain, it is wholly English in its origin—created in the late 1700s by enterprising Staffordshire potters seeking to blend the allure of the East with British storytelling flair. The tale it tells is that of two forbidden lovers, escaping across a bridge and transforming into doves, set against a fantastical backdrop of pagodas, pavilions, weeping willows, and island gardens. No two versions are exactly the same, but the romantic architecture and winding rivers remain constant.

This particular platter boasts a deep, saturated blue—so classic it almost glows—and a beautifully scalloped octagonal border. It’s likely from the early 20th century and would have been used for special occasion roasts, fish, or cold puddings in a well-appointed English home. There is minor wear and patina to the glaze appropriate to its age, but it remains in beautifully display-worthy condition.
