Moody Antique Floral Still Life Painting, Oil on Linen, Signed, Ornate Gold Frame

This moody antique floral still life is one of those pieces that’s completely mesmerizing. It’s oil on stretched linen with amazing texture in the palette knife work of the bouquet…everything  about it whispers of a storied past, from the black background to the jewel-toned flora in the blue French vase to the ornate Gold frame.

It’s framed in solid wood that’s beautifully and ornately carved. There is some light cracking in the wood. Like laugh lines on an aged face, they add a depth of character. That’s one of the things I love most about offering these heirloom vintage and antique pieces…knowing that their story isn’t ending; a new chapter is being added. 

The artist signed in the lower left corner, but I can’t make out the name.

I acquired it at the familial Castle Hills estate of a former San Antonio mayor and judge considered one of the city's founders. His daughter, who spent countless hours serving on various charity boards, was also an active and prominent member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT). 

This estate had so many lovely things, like the large 19th-century tapestry and Sitzendorf figural candlesticks. I was thrilled to have sourced some of the most fantastic things. 

Pieces like this are why I love sourcing the South and the great state of Texas for vintage and antique estate decor. Shopping estate sales, auctions, charity thrift stores, and antique malls to carefully curate a collection of fantastic finds that have and will stand the test of time is my favorite thing to do.
