Antique French Gilt Bronze Figural Double Inkwell | Rococo Style

An extraordinary antique French gilt bronze double inkwell, sourced from France and filled with the lavish ornamentation and old-world romance that makes French decorative arts so collectible.

At the center, an elegantly draped female figure rises from an exuberantly modeled base of scrolling acanthus leaves, shellwork, florals and sweeping Rococo curves. Two lidded inkwells are beautifully incorporated into the design, transforming what was once a functional writing accessory into a true objet d’art.

The aged gilt finish is especially beautiful, with a warm, time-softened patina that settles into the deeply modeled decoration and highlights every wonderful detail. Even the reverse is beautifully sculpted, giving the piece presence from every angle.

An old handwritten label remains on the underside marked “Fr. – 1860” and “$975.00.” The label is part of the piece’s collected history; however, the 1860 notation has not been independently authenticated as the date of manufacture.
