“Young Dancers Sitting” signed Ventage | Vintage Mid-Century Ballet Oil Painting

OBSESSED! This painting was one of the reasons I attended this estate sale and let me te you, it stopped me dead in my tracks. That doesn't happen often… I'm like grab and go because estate sales are crazy these days but I just literally stopped and stared… it completely exceeded all of my expectations. Then I grabbed it and ran, lol

It’s a quiet moment behind the curtain. This striking vintage oil painting, titled “Young Dancers Sitting” and signed Ventage, captures the grace and gravity of life beyond the spotlight. Two young ballerinas, wrapped in layers of tulle and contemplation, rest between movements—one seated in stillness, the other leaning forward as if whispering encouragement. Their coral-toned leotards and cool blue skirts contrast beautifully against a moody teal background, evoking the subtle elegance of a Degas-inspired scene.

Framed in a refined, mid-century gilt frame with a textured linen mat, this large-scale piece exudes both drama and softness—perfect for any room in need of feminine strength, artistic flair, or a bit of balletcore charm.

C. Ventage is an artist known for creating prints that capture scenes of dancers, often in moments of preparation or rest. Two notable works attributed to C. Ventage include “Young Dancers Sitting” and “Preparing for Rehearsal.” These pieces were published by Penn Prints, a New York-based publisher, and printed in Spain .

Despite the presence of these works in the art market, there is limited publicly available information about C. Ventage’s biography or artistic background. The scarcity of detailed records suggests that C. Ventage may have been a commercial or decorative artist, with works primarily distributed through publishers like Penn Prints. Little is known regarding the originals of the pieces reproduced as prints. This piece is signed Ventage but could be an homage to the artist and his work by another artist- either way, it’s an AMAZING PIECE and a special addition to any collection.

It’s substantial measuring 38” tall x 32.5” wide x 2” deep framed.

It was acquired at the lovely Austin estate of  a design enthusiast who graduated  from Parsons School of Design in New York and the Université of Jean Moulin in Lyon, France. He later had a successful career at the University of Texas as the assistant to the Dean of The College of Fine Arts and was curator of the Historical Textiles and Apparel Collection. It was full of European treasures brought back from his time abroad.  It was a maximalist’s dream. He was also a well known performer around Austin revered for his singing, dancing, acting, and musically as a gifted pianist.

Pieces like this are why I love Sourcing the South and the great state of Texas for vintage and antique heirloom estate decor is my favorite thing to do...shopping estate sales, online auctions, charity thrift stores, and antique malls to carefully curate a collection of fantastic finds that have and will stand the test of time.
