Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn | 19th Century Framed Watercolor & Gouache Attributed to Alfred Edward Chalon, R.A.

Before Anne Boleyn wore the crown, she took Henry VIII’s hand for a dance. In Act I, Scene 4 of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, the king arrives in disguise at Cardinal Wolsey’s supper and chooses Anne as his partner. This hand-painted watercolor and gouache on paper brings us close enough to see the meeting of their hands. Anne glances away beneath the pale fan vaulting, with a sweep of blue drapery against her ivory gown and Henry’s rich red cloak.

The painting is attributed to Alfred Edward Chalon, R.A. (1780–1860), after a detail from a composition by English artist Thomas Stothard. Chalon was a sought-after British society portraitist and the first artist Queen Victoria sat for after her accession. She appointed him her Portrait Painter in Watercolours in 1837.

Turn the frame over and you’ll find the label from The Pulitzer Gallery, 5 Kensington High Street, London. It records the painting as catalogue no. 91 in the gallery’s December 1958 exhibition, with gallery number 810. A pencil inscription on the reverse identifies the Shakespeare scene, and a separate handwritten note on the backing describes Chalon’s career. The painting is apparently unsigned and undated.

With its wide cream mat and slender gold-toned frame, this is the sort of small-scale artwork I’d hang beside a bookcase or where you can get close enough to see the white brushstrokes on Anne’s gown. It has a story for anyone who collects British watercolors, Tudor history, Shakespearean art, or original paintings for a collected home.
