Vintage Herend Rothschild Bird Scalloped Triangle Dish

Herend Rothschild Bird is a favorite! With it’s beautiful birds accented with colorful butterflies and insects, and of course the folklore surrounding its creation (see below),  it’s one of those patterns that has and will stand the test of time just as Herend’s quality has.

Hand painted in Hungary with 24kt gold accents.

All of the Herend Rothschild Bird, the Chinese Bouquet Bean Pot, and the large Herend Fishnet Pheasant are from the same Austin estate. The Lady of the house lived to be 91 and was quite a colorful character by all accounts, she was still snow skiing at 78. She was born in Munich, educated in England, and lived in the US most of her adult life. She enjoyed her pieces and truly was a collector’s collector.

It measures 9.5” long x 2” tall x 10” wide and is in lovely estate condition.

The story of Rothschild Bird (RO):

Legend has it that the Baroness Rothschild lost her Pearl necklace one day in the garden of her Vienna estate. It was later found by the gardener who saw two lovely little birds playing with it in a tree. This charming tale became the inspiration for the beloved pattern created by Herend.

In the 1850s, The Rothschild family who adored the bird-patterned ordered the entire collection prompting Herend to officially name the pattern in their honor in 1861.

Fun fact: Princess Diana chose Rothschild Bird for her wedding reception.
