Vintage Patinated Bronze Sculpture | Cupid-Inspired Boy with Book & Bird | Classical Styling in the Tradition of Clodion
A little writer, a feathered companion, and a story that draws you closer.
Recalling the romantic Cupid-writing subjects associated with Clodion, this substantial bronze captures a beautifully intimate scene: a young boy with a writing implement in hand, an open book across his lap, and a bird beside him. Is he composing a love letter? Sharing his thoughts with his feathered confidant? The scene leaves just enough to the imagination.
The comparison brings to mind a bronze cataloged by Christie’s as “after Clodion, circa 1880,” depicting Cupid transcribing a list with a dove behind him. Our sculpture offers its own interpretation of that enchanting subject, with a different pose and composition. The Clodion reference describes its classical styling; the sculptor and exact production date remain unknown.
And then there is the bronze itself. Tousled curls, carefully modeled fingers and toes, flowing drapery, and roses at the base give the eye somewhere beautiful to linger. Its warm brown patina catches the light across the figure, revealing the sculptural detail from every angle.
At approximately 18 inches wide and weighing 23.5 pounds, this is a substantial work of decorative sculpture with the presence to anchor an entire vignette. Imagine it on a French commode, a library table layered with leather-bound books, or a generous mantel in a collected home.
Offered at $1,247, it is an opportunity to bring home a large figural bronze with romantic subject matter, remarkable detail, and heirloom-worthy presence.
