Vintage Prince Balthasar Carlos on Horseback Painting, Oil on Canvas, After Diego Velazquez, Equestrian Art

Fantastic vintage oil painting on canvas of Balthasar Carlos, Prince of Asturias, Spain on horseback. It’s a reproduction of the original 1653 painting by Diego Velázquez, which hangs at the Prado Museum in Madrid.

Velázquez was commissioned to paint a series of equestrian portraits for the Hall of Realms, originally a wing in Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid.

I love the colors and whimsy of this piece. It’s framed in ornately carved solid wood with a gold finish. There is a hanging wire attached. You can see there is some wobble in the canvas but nothing that detracts from it’s fantasticness.

I acquired it from a glorious Central Texas estate I was fortunate enough to private shop- the same as the antique Lustres. When I entered the home through the courtyard, I immediately saw a room the size of a ballroom with tablecafter table of crystal, silver plate, antique sterling, brass and don't even get me started on the jewelry. It was exceptional top to bottom.
