Architectural salvage, old-world character, and just the right amount of whimsy.

This fabulous opposing pair of vintage carved wood monkey sconces was rescued directly from a home slated for demolition—exactly the kind of architectural salvage I believe deserves to be saved, preserved, and given another life.

Each substantial sconce features a wonderfully expressive carved monkey dressed in an elaborate costume and tricorn hat, positioned beneath dramatic carved palm fronds. Gilt accents and scrolling two-light metal candle arms complete the wonderfully theatrical design.

The monkeys face opposite directions, creating an intentional opposing pair perfect for flanking a painting, mirror, doorway, console, or chest.

And then there are the shades.

I sourced this fabulous pair of fringed shades approximately four years ago and tucked them away, waiting for the right pieces. When I rediscovered them alongside these sconces, the combination was too good to separate. The shades are included with the pair.

These are exactly what I love about whimsical decor: they’re playful without being frivolous, decorative without being ordinary, and substantial enough to hold their own in a sophisticated, collected interior. Part lighting, part sculpture, and guaranteed conversation pieces.

Comparable vintage Italian and Continental carved wood monkey sconces are currently offered on the decorative-arts market in the low-to-mid thousands, with similar pairs carrying asking prices of approximately $2,000–$4,000. While asking prices should not be confused with realized sales, they provide useful context for this wonderfully unusual form.

Condition

Vintage estate condition with the wonderful age, patina, surface variation, and wear expected of salvaged decorative lighting.

Please note that the metal candle arms have differing aged finishes: one sconce has a warmer gilt/brass-toned appearance, while the other is more silvered in appearance. We cannot determine whether this variation resulted from an earlier alteration, refinishing, or replacement during their lifetime. They are being offered exactly as found; please review photographs carefully.

As with all vintage and antique electrical fixtures, professional inspection and installation by a qualified electrician is recommended.
