Pair of Antique Hand-Painted Satin Opalescent Art Glass Vanity Bottles with Gilt Decoration

Late 19th–Early 20th Century

There is a certain kind of beauty that only reveals itself in soft light—and this exquisite pair of antique vanity bottles embodies it completely.

Crafted in the late 19th to early 20th century, these vessels are made of blown satin opalescent art glass, prized for its velvety surface and gentle, luminous glow. Often mistaken for opaline, this glass is more nuanced: translucent rather than opaque, with a delicate blush-to-ivory tone that seems to hold the light within it. The satin finish was achieved through acid-etching, a labor-intensive process that diffuses light and gives the surface its soft, powdery elegance.

Each bottle is hand-painted with enamel florals, framed within a circular reserve and accented by raised gilt detailing—a technique requiring both a steady hand and artistic precision. The gold decoration is applied atop the glass rather than transferred, giving each piece subtle variation and unmistakable depth. Warm gilt metal necks, likely brass or bronze, complete the design and were individually fitted, as was customary in fine vanity and dressing-table objects of the period.

These bottles belong to a tradition of late Victorian and early Edwardian art glass, when decorative objects were created not only for function but to glow softly by lamplight. Pieces like this would have graced an elegant toilette or dressing table, admired as much for their artistry as their utility.

Whether styled on a silver tray, nestled among antique perfumes, or displayed as sculptural accents, this pair brings a sense of quiet luxury and old-world romance to a collected interior.

A refined example of antique art glass—subtle, luminous, and endlessly elegant.

I acquired them from a posh estate in the Castle Hills area of San Antonio… the same as the two Chinese Chippendale pagoda mirrors. To say this place was pretty swank is a huge understatement🩷 It was a glorious mix of chinoiserie and French pieces…a true dream estate to source.

Each measures 8.5” tall x 4” wide x 4” deep

Pieces like this are why I love Sourcing the South and the great state of Texas- especially Round Top- for heirloom estate decor…shopping estate sales, online auctions, charity thrift stores, and antique malls to carefully curate a collection of fantastic vintage and antique finds that have and will stand the test of time.
