Lovely rendition of  ‘The Virgin in the Chair (Madonna della sedia)’ was painted by Raphael in his Roman period circa 1513-1514,

It beautifully depicts Mary, holding the Christ Child, Jesus in her arms, with a young John the Baptist lovingly gazing at the two. Its title lends to the presence of a chair which seems to signify papal furniture, suggesting that it was Pope Leo X himself who commissioned the original painting which is currently on display in the Saturn Room of the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace, Florence. Stolen by the Napoleonic troops in 1799, it hung for a number of years in the Château de Malmaison at the request of Joséphine Bonaparte.

The Madonna della Sedia is considered the most important of Raphael's Madonnas. It’s the most personal form of the Madonna, an incarnation of a loving mother and child, representing human motherhood.

I acquired this piece at the glorious Central Texas estate of a world-renowned business leader who purchased it in Europe. It’s oil on linen enveloped in an ornate gold wood frame. it’s artist signed, but I don’t find any informatiin on them.

It measures 30” tall x 26” wide framed. Absolutely stunning!
