THE MEMPHIS SWANS – VINTAGE DOUBLE-SWAN PLANTER WITH CUSTOM OLD WORLD FINISH
Memphis to Austin…and an Old World transformation ensued.
While sourcing at an antique mall in Memphis, we met an older couple placing sale signs throughout their booth. We overheard them mention that sales had been slow, and as small-business owners ourselves, we understood what one good sale could mean.
Among their pieces were two vintage swan planters. Their original blue, pink, and iridescent finishes were not doing their beautiful sculptural details any favors, but Lara could immediately see their potential. Both swans came home with us, the couple was delighted to have made the sales, and everyone left a little happier that day.
This extraordinary double-swan planter was then completely reimagined by hand. Lara slowly built the custom finish with layers of warm ivory paint, carefully painted black accents, and deep terracotta-colored beaks. Aged brown wax was worked into the feathers, wings, and recessed details to create depth, emphasize the wonderful carving, and give the ceramic the romantic appearance of beautifully timeworn wood.
The final detail is a pair of soft green bows made from ribbon sourced in Paris by a dear friend. With its muted green and creamy ivory tones, the French ribbon complements the aged finish beautifully and adds a wonderfully whimsical flourish.
Generously sized and highly sculptural, The Memphis Swans make an unforgettable centerpiece. Fill the planter with hydrangeas, seasonal greenery, a small Christmas tree, or vintage ornaments—or allow its dramatic form to stand entirely on its own. Romantic, whimsical, and unique, it is the sort of statement piece that gives a collected home its unmistakable personality.
