Vintage Japanese Kutani-Style Goose & Gander Pair | Hand-Painted Made in Japan

An absolutely charming pair of vintage Japanese Kutani-style ceramic geese, beautifully hand decorated in brilliant cobalt blue, green, yellow and brown—and with some of the most fabulous oversized webbed feet we’ve ever seen.

What makes this pair especially wonderful are their two distinct poses. The goose rests low with her neck curved downward, suggestive of a female settled onto her nest, while the gander stands tall and watchful beside her. The poses beautifully echo the natural behavior of nesting geese: the female typically incubates the eggs while her mate remains nearby, alert and protective of the nest.

Their richly colored decoration is inspired by the Japanese Kutani tradition, known for elaborate polychrome enamels, vivid color and beautifully detailed naturalistic subjects. Each retains a Made in Japan label on the underside.

Together they have exactly the right mix of elegance and whimsy. Fabulous on a mantel or console, tucked among blue-and-white porcelain, displayed in a bookcase, or anywhere a collected home needs a little personality.
