1956 French Line Illustrated Menu — Frère Jacques | Jean A. Mercier
A familiar French song, dressed beautifully for an ocean voyage. This original 1956 French Line menu features Jean A. Mercier’s playful illustration for “Frère Jacques,” with a young bell-ringer suspended from a bell rope beneath an enormous bell, accompanied by a pink bird and a distant village landscape.
The reverse carries the song’s printed music and French lyrics, complemented by a decorative bell motif. Its musical arrangement is credited to Charles Dumont. The printed credit identifies the illustration and arrangement as selections from Nos vieilles chansons (“Our Old Songs”), a collection of traditional French songs adapted for these charming French Line menus.
A delightful piece of vintage travel ephemera, it brings color, whimsy, and history to a collected home. Frame it for a gallery wall, tuck it into a bookcase display, or pair it with other illustrated menus for artwork that feels uniquely yours.
